Scouts Memorial Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham

Before leaving Cannon Hill Park in Birmingham, have a look at the Scouts Memorial. Its tucked away at the far end of the car park in a small corner all by itself. There are no names on this war memorial. which was erected in honor of the men from the Scouts that enlisted and died in World War One and Two.

The photographs of the Scouts War Memorial in Cannon Hill were taken in early 2007.

The dedication on the front says the following:

To the Scouts who fell in the Great War and the World War.

A short and simple dedication but to the point. On the reverse is the Scouts emblem and also the words Pro Patria 1914 - 1918 and 1939 - 1945 (I think).

So when visiting Cannon Hill Park take a look at both the War Memorials and enjoy this little piece of tranquility in the heart of Birmingham City.

To end this blog here are a few old postcards of Cannon Hill park from my own collection.

That completes the Cannon Hill War Memorial. there is another war memorial by the park which has no names but I will show in another blog along with the others that I have now photographed and recorded.

There are so many postcards of this war memorial and it was a favourite during the first part of the twentieth century to visit for a holiday.

Boer War Memorial, Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham Gardner to Parker

As the Boer War Memorial in Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham has such a long list of names. Here is the second part covering the third panel from Gardner to Parker. The South African War soldiers who died from 1899 to 1902 from Birmingham are commemorated on this large memorial in the park.

This is the side view of the memorial taken in about 2007. Our dog Ufton was very interested also!

This postcard of Cannon Hill park was sent in 1944 by someone on holiday in the area. Apart from general aging of the stone and the park has less floral beds and topiary, little had changed.

Still one more panel to go and that I will cover in the next blog. Such a long list of names that is on this memorial of the Birmingham men that died during this Victorian war. Will we never learn!

Spring with one of the Tulip Festivals taken place in Cannon Hill Park. Such a riot of colour with the South African War Memorial standing in the middle.

Cannon Hill Park War Memorial, Birmingham for the South Africa War 1899 - 1902 (A - GA)

One of the longest list of names on a war memorial is in Cannon Hill Park in Birmingham. This memorial is to remember the fallen men from the South African War of 1899 to 1902. General Sir Ian Hamilton unveiled this large memorial for the Birmingham men who died in this conflict on the 23rd June 1906. Because each panel has such a long list of names, I will cover this over three blog posts for ease.

The sculpture was made by Albert Toft. I will apologies for this first very long blog post but the list of names run into hundred and then I have plenty of pictures with post cards to show. This blog will cover the names from the beginning of A to Gales.

This was the War Memorial situated in the park taken in January 2007.  It has essentially 4 sides to it with a dedication and then panels of names listed. Some have the regiment served and all have their rank. The panels were very difficult to read and I had to make a list after taking the photographs on this cold January day. Our dog was very patient and stood by my side looking up to see what I was doing!

Side 1 at the front had the dedication and it read as such:

To the glorious memory of the sons of Birmingham who fell in South Africa 1899 - 1902 and to perpetuate the example of all who served in the war. This memorial is erected by their fellow citizens.

There are some scattered memorials for this South African War also known as the Boer War around. Not as many as found for the First World War but they are very valuable to local historians and to those tracing their family history.

The above post card was sent in 1907 from Birmingham to Water Orton in Birmingham. It meant a lot to the sender who was a grandmother and I suspect a mother of one of the men listed.

The second side had the following names on listed in alphabetical order:
